Kindergarten students will create a book about themselves using drawing, writing, and visuals to tell their story.
Goals
SWBAT: Use a combination of drawing, and writing to compose informative/explanatory texts in which they name what they are writing about and supply some information about the topic.
SWBAT: Tell the story of who they are and what makes them special
SWBAT: Become the author’s and Illustrator’s of their own special books.
SWBAT: Will be able to retell a story in their own words.

Activity
Students will create a book about themselves entitled “I am Awesome”
They will create drawings and label their drawings that show why they are awesome.

Read Aloud “The Day you Begin” By Jacqueline Woodson
Self portraits, different pieces of self created art focusing on what students love to do.
Family photos that can be shared in their book.
Connections to Students Passion Areas and Interests
Connections will be shared through the pages of the book and video. The students will understand who they are and why they are so awesome. Students will feel a sense of pride and realize that they are collaborating in their own learning. Students will build upon sight words and letters and their sounds.
Materials Needed
Book – The Day That You Begin
Sesame Street Video – What makes you special?
Construction paper, pencils, multicultural crayons, glue sticks, pipe cleaners, hole puncher (for teacher).

Family engagement is necessary.
Assessment
Students will be assessed on the finished product:
Student will share with the class their finished book
Understanding of the assignment
Artwork details and creativity
Correctly sounding out picture and writing the correct letter of word
Timeline
Over the course of one week during the ELA period we will work on this activity. Will allot more time if necessary.
Other Notes
Students will become authors and illustrators of their own lives. They can build upon these books each year. They are able to create and own their joy in class. They are the Captains of the ship. I am only the guide. I would play music softly in hopes that they would allow the music to guide some of their creativity, or let the music just bring them joy as they create.
